Extract from the "China Mail" of the 8th March, 1897.

IN commemoration of the sixtieth year of the reign of Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, the Methodists are raising a fund of £10,000 for Soldiers and Sailors Homes in the Empire. Hongkong, Peshawur, Rawal Pindi and Lucknow are the places selected abroad. We have already in these columns drawn attention to the need of such a Home in this Colony, and are glad to see that it is within measurable distance of accomplishment. The Inaugural Meeting was held on Wednesday, Jan. 13, in the Royal United Service Institution, Sir George Hayter Chubb in the chair. The Hon. Viscount Templeton, Major-General Lord Methuen, C.B., C.M.G., Admiral the Right Hon. Sir J. C. D. Hay, Bart., the Right Hon. Sir H. H. Fowler, G.C.S.I., M.P., were present, and Field Marshal the Right Hon. Lord Wolseley, K.P., Commander-in-Chief, sent a message expressing his sympathy with the movement. The first week in May, Her Royal Highness Princess Mary Adelaide, Duchess of Teck, will attend a reception and receive purses on behalf of this Fund. The matter is worthy the attention of residents in Hongkong interested in the welfare of the soldiers and sailors.
